About the Role
The National Director of Field Medical Affairs and MSL Team Lead is a highly visible, strategic leadership role responsible for the overall direction, management, and performance of the Field Medical Affairs team nationwide. The individual serves as a critical bridge between the commercial and clinical development functions, ensuring that the Regional Field MSLs effectively communicate complex scientific and clinical data to external stakeholders including Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs), academic medical centers and healthcare professionals. The role drives execution of the medical strategy, develops and mentors a high-performing team, assesses ongoing competency and ensures all field activities adhere to compliance guidelines.
Key Responsibilities
- Team Leadership and Management
- Recruit, onboard, train and provide ongoing coaching and performance management for regional MSLs.
- Develop and report key performance indicators (KPIs) for regional MSLs aligned with departmental and corporate goals.
- Provide mentorship and identify career development opportunities for regional MSLs.
- Strategic Planning and Execution
- Identify key opinion leader and institutional accounts using strategic selection criteria and methodologies.
- Lead MSL team in developing and executing regional engagement plans.
- KOL Engagement Strategy
- Facilitate collection and synthesis of actionable field insights to inform medical strategy, product development and life cycle management.
- Advance regional MSL capabilities in clinical and scientific engagement with KOLs and clinicians at key institutions.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Ensure collaboration between Field Medical Affairs and internal functions to provide clinical/scientific expertise and support.
- Compliance and Training
- Lead continuous training efforts to ensure proficient with scientific knowledge, disease states, emerging therapies and the healthcare landscape.
- Develop and lead MSL onboarding to ensure scientific competency and compliance with regulations, codes and guidelines.
Education and Experience Qualifications:
• Education:
- Advanced degree (Pharm.D., Ph.D., NP, PA, RN, MD, or equivalent) required.
• Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years in Medical Affairs, preferably as an MSL, with at least 2 years experience in an MSL leadership role.
- Proven ability to lead and inspire geographically dispersed teams, fostering collaboration and accountability.
- Demonstrated success in building high-performing teams and developing talent through coaching and mentorship.
- Experience leading cross-functional teams in a matrixed environment, influencing without direct authority.
- Strong strategic thinking and decision-making skills, with the ability to align team objectives to organizational goals.
- Clinical experience in relevant therapeutic area for position preferred.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
• Industry Knowledge:
- Deep understanding of the U.S. healthcare system and medical affairs.
- Familiarity with KOL engagement and stakeholder management skills.
This role requires up to 50% nationwide travel and reports to the Senior Vice President Therapeutic Area Head, Cardiometabolic.
