About the role
The Automation / Controls Engineer leads the controls engineering scope for assigned, well-defined tasks and projects under guidance, owning the full lifecycle (plan, design, build, integration, test, support) within the single-engineer model to deliver safe, reliable, accurate, repeatable, and maintainable systems in Class 7 cleanrooms and cGMP environments, transitioning first-line support to Manufacturing Engineering and Maintenance (remaining as second-line support).
* Plans, tracks, and communicates work in the company-standard project/task management system; delivers scope on time and within budget.
* Design and documentation: reads, drafts, and updates P&IDs; electrical schematics; pneumatic diagrams; panel layouts; field device layouts; BOMs; process flow diagrams; submits for review.
* Build: performs enclosure/panel fabrication and wiring; field device conduit and wiring; follows NEC, UL, CE and internal standards.
* Integration:
* Implements and tests safety functions (e-stops, light curtains, safety relays) under guidance.
* Configures operator controls, relays/contactors, transducers, pneumatics, motors and basic drives (e.g., DC/VFD/stepper) and process controllers.
* Networking: sets up simple local equipment networks. Guided on advanced local and remote networking.
* PLC/HMI: develops basic ladder logic routines and HMI screens; debounces/scales signals; monitors/controls common variables (temperature, pressure, speed, position, flow, level) via discrete/analog/serial/ethernet interfaces.
* Test/debug: executes test plans; documents defects; participates in root cause and corrective actions.
* Validation/documentation: supports cGMP validation (IQ/OQ/PQ) led by Process Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and Quality; maintains accurate build/configuration records.
* Support and continuous improvement: provide initial first-line support after equipment goes into service to achieve reliable operation; transition first-line support to Maintenance and remain second-line support; capture lessons learned; suggest incremental improvements to designs and standards; Support legacy controls systems commensurate with role level
